WOGI Institute 2008 Update

The annual WOGI Institute took place on June 9-10 in St. Augustine at the Renaissance’s World Golf Village.  This year’s institute was very well attended with fifty-three participants receiving pertinent information related to the field of gifted plus a wealth of resources to support the gifted endorsement modules and a copy of the newly revised Special Populations module.  Special Pops is the fifth of the modules to be revised and WOGI will continue to consider updates to the modules as needed.

The agenda featured presentations by Mary Ann Clark on rigorous curriculum utilizing Dr. Sandra Kaplan’s model of Depth and Complexity, a session on the identification of underrepresented populations by Dr. Susan Johnsen, and an introduction and demonstration by Dr. Ben Graffam and Manny Klimis on the newly developed CD that can be used as a management tool to assist teachers in developing goals for EP’s using the Florida Framework for K-12 Gifted Learners.  DOE, this year’s pilot participants, and the presenters of the Parent Workshops also gave updates.  Evaluations indicated that the material presented was very relevant, informative, and beneficial.

On Tuesday afternoon, WOGI sponsored a special follow-up session with Dr. Susan Johnsen for representatives of state universities and colleges.  The session featured the new National Gifted Education Standards for university teacher preparation programs and for Pre-K-12 professional development. Participants were also guided through the steps for certification.

Plans are already in the making for the 2009 WOGI Institute.  WOGI has identified the tentative dates of June 7 and 8th, 2009.  Mark your calendars now to attend the Institute at the Marriott Renaissance’s World Golf Village beginning mid-afternoon on June 7 and extending all day June 8, 2009.
